Meet Dr. Jordan Trapp
Hello everyone!
I'm thrilled that you're here, and I'd like to take a moment to introduce myself before diving into the world of naturopathic medicine. Here are a few things to know about me: I love fitness—I used to be a personal trainer, I've run marathons (and plan to run another one day), and I have a fur baby named Cooper, whom I absolutely adore. When I'm not at work or the gym, you might find me working on a puzzle, enjoying time with family and friends, or binge-watching "Real Housewives," my guilty pleasure. Oh, and I am a chronic myeloid leukemia fighter, but don't worry—I am winning that battle.
Now, let's talk about my journey into naturopathic medicine. Initially, I planned to become a nurse, inspired by the wonderful neonatal nurses who cared for me when I was born prematurely. My mom spoke so highly of her nurses and all I could think was how much I wanted to be able to make an impact in people's lives like they had. However, a single introductory class in molecular and cellular biology suddenly changed everything. I became fascinated by the complexities of the human body and knew that my true passion was in understanding the science behind it.
I shifted my focus from nursing to molecular and cellular biology, and one of the elective courses I took was something I didn't think I'd be interested in—the biology of cancer. Boy, was I wrong. I was completely captivated by the complexity of the disease, the intricate processes involved, and how cancer seemed to function almost like its own organism. I know that sounds a bit strange, but it was that class that changed everything for me. That's when I knew I wanted to be a doctor. I started working in a hospital on a bone marrow transplant and oncology unit, loving the bedside care and the connections I made with patients. But I soon became disillusioned with the conventional medical approach: I saw a lack of compassion, a rigid focus on protocols, and a reluctance to engage with patients' questions and concerns. I felt there was more we could do for those in need.
After consulting with my family and therapist, I decided to step back and explore other avenues. This led me to the fitness industry, where I became a coach at a group fitness gym and later at F45. My passion for fitness and wellness grew, but I still yearned to find a way to make a difference in healthcare. That’s when I discovered Sonoran University of Health Sciences, formerly Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine. After a tour and interview, I knew I had found my path.
While at Sonoran, I pursued my interest in integrative cancer care, finding a mentor who guided me through the complexities of the field. After completing my doctorate in 2021, I took a residency in Washington State, focusing on integrative cancer care, complex illness, and chronic illness. Despite the invaluable experience, Washington wasn't the right place for me—I don’t know how you PNWers can deal with the dark and rain. I knew I had to return to my roots in Arizona.
Once back in the sunshine, I began my search for a new practice and found West Valley Naturopathic Center, where I’ve been happily working for about one year. My focus has shifted to general medicine, women's health, and chronic illness, and I'm passionate about helping my patients achieve optimal health through a holistic approach.
That's my story in a nutshell. If you’d like to stay updated with my latest tips and insights on naturopathic medicine, be sure to join my email list. I look forward to connecting with you and supporting your journey to better health.
Until next time,
Dr. Jordan Trapp
